Sun and Moon Letters: Explained
In Arabic, the word for "the" is "al". When "al" is followed by a moon letter, you pronounce it as "al". But when it is followed by a sun letter, you don't pronounce the "l", instead you
pronounce the sun letter twice.
For example, the moon in Arabic is "al qamar."
The sun in Arabic is written as "al shams", but pronounced "ash shams," because sh (ﺵ) is a sun letter.
